Amherstburg receives $173,900 for The War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration from The Ontario Trillium Foundation
AMHERSTBURG(December 17, 2009) - The Provincial Marine Amherstburg Re-enactment Unit in cooperation with The Town of Amherstburg Tourism Department has received a $173,900 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The grant will assist with activities that will tell the story of the War of 1812 as it relates to the western theatre.
The War of 1812 has been said to be the only pivotal war fought on Canadian Soil, as such it deserves proper recognition and commemoration during its Bi centennial years. Two hundred years later, (1812-2012) there is no better time than now to celebrate "the peace and friendship that has long endured" between Canada and the United States. The War of 1812 strongly shaped the nation that Canada has become today.
The funds will be used for a life size bronze monument in Kings Navy Yard Park crafted by a local artisan honouring Marine’s that gave of their life during the compelling War of 1812. As well, electronic outdoor kiosks are to be constructed that will engage visitors to interactively learn about the various stories and historic sites around Amherstburg and region. Other commemorative events such as live re enactments and a descendant’s picnic weekend are planned between now and 2014.
