NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Friday, May 14, 2010 (Buffalo NY / Niagara ON)

On May 16, 2010 the Dearborn Street Community Association will hold a dedication ceremony for the first U.S. 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden .

The event will be attended by Mayor Byron Brown, Common Council Member Joseph Golombek Jr. and Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, invited guests from Canada and the U.S. involved in a variety of 1812 Bicentennial projects.

This dedication ceremony will establish the first War of 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden in Western New York, located in historic Black Rock, the site of much of the action of the War of 1812 as the first of three Bicentennial Peace Gardens in this community and the first of several to be launched this year in Western New York .

The Bicentennial Art of Peace Garden Trail is an initiative undertaken by the Binational Economic & Tourism Alliance, Canadian and U.S. Community Partners from Niagara, Hamilton , Haldimand, Norfolk , Brant and Halton Regions as well as the eight Counties of Western New York, and the International Peace Garden Foundation. The goal is to create a cross-border Peace Garden Trail throughout the Niagara Frontier territory of the War of 1812 to commemorate the 200 years of peace that have existed between Canada and the United States since that war. The Peace Gardens will provide a wide variety of cultural programming year-round for residents and visitors to our area, and stand as a lasting legacy to the longest undefended border in the world and the friendship between our two countries.

This launch event is designed to reflect Black Rock’s exposure and activities in the War of 1812 conflict. The Heritage Garden is one of three 1812 Bicentennial gardens planned by the Dearborn Street Community Association for the Black Rock neighbourhood. The Heritage Garden includes a variety of floral and vegetable plantings used to create the design along with a commemorative trail marker to designate the 1812 connection, and will be used for community cultural and art events.

Community members are welcome to attend the dedication event on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 269 Dearborn St. , Buffalo NY , along with invited guests from throughout the binational region. Registration will begin at 1:00 pm. with the dedication at 1:30 pm., followed by a reception at 2:00 pm. Refreshments and displays will be on-site and guests will be invited to tour the Religious Art Center , which is opening for this occasion.
