FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 28, 2010 – Niagara-on-theLake, Ontario - At an announcement on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the Niagara Historical Society Museum in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Kim Craitor, Member of Provincial Parliament, Niagara Falls made a funding announcement for 1812 Bicentennial projects in the Niagara Region.
The Niagara 1812 Bicentennial Legacy Council received $50,000 from the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism and Culture to continue the facilitation and coordination of the Bicentennial celebrations in the Niagara Region.
The Niagara Historical Society and Museum received $28,000 through the Cultural Strategic Investment Fund (CSIF) from the Ontario Ministry Culture to facilitate the ongoing activities of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Bicentennial Committee by providing human resources support to the committee. This individual will develop and coordinate events and develop public relations and marketing programs for the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake as they relate to the War of 1812. Additional funding for this position will be supplied by the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake
The Niagara Historical Society and Museum also received $46,300 through the Museums and Technology Grant program from the Ontario Ministry of Culture. The project’s aim is to develop a virtual exhibition that showcases important information about the community and how it was affected by the War of 1812. It will include the development of an interactive map that will allow visitors to explore the community online. It will also include ‘YouTube’ videos contributed by the Niagara Historical Society, partners and the general public. These videos will bring the events of 1812 to the 21st century by providing us with a link to the past. Additional Funding for this project will be supplied by The Trillium Foundation.
The Niagara Falls International Marathon received $35, 750 under Celebrate Ontario program from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism to introduce 1812 programming to the annual event. The Marathon will add an 1812 theme to the existing Schools Marathon Challenge, which had participation from over 1000 kids from Grade four to eight in 2009. The Marathon will also create the “1812 Peace & Friendship Marathon Relay.”
The Niagara 1812 Bicentennial Legacy Council is a bi-national non-profit organization established to commemorate the War of 1812 and celebrate the 200 years of peace between Canada and the United States which have followed.
