Two hundred years ago seems like a long time, yet some of life’s pleasures are timeless. Here is your chance to experience just a couple of ways a woman might pass a day, creating something of pleasure and enjoyment. There were shops selling fancy confectionery and millinery in the new Federal city of Washington. At our workshop, you can try your hand at one of these trades. Confectioners produced fancy sweets of all kinds for parties, gifts, and formal dessert displays. You could purchase such treats for a walk in the park or a token for a sweetheart. Milliners nor only trimmed and sold hats, but also provided a wide range of “fancy articles,” such as stockings, gloves, reticules, and other accessories, ribbons, flowers, feathers, and other trimmings, and even dress fabrics.
